Sureste | South East

I first came to Mallorca in 1971. I was only here for a couple of weeks, but it left a lasting impression on me and I always hoped that at some point, I might be able to come back. And then, some thirty years later, I was living here. This island is so very special. The weather, the topography, the people, and the culture. Since I moved here from Barcelona, I have lived in Palma; in Puigpunyent, under the shadow of Galatxo; both Illetes and Bendinat; and in summers, on my boat in Pto Andratx. There was something special about living on that side of the island, and those memories are, like the areas themselves, very special.

But returning to Mallorca after spending several years in the Caribbean, I now live in the South East, in the village of Colonia Sant Jordi, a former fishing colony that is part of the municipal district of Ses Salines. Arriving here, shortly after the lockdown in March began, I felt an overwhelming sensation of once again, being “home” again.

The photos in this book were all taken by myself, between late March and November 2020. And whilst none of the photos contain images of people, accomplishing this was not all that difficult as the number of non-Mallorquin tourists here has been desperately low.

When I first visualised this book as a project, I had thought about writing what it is like living in the South East, and whilst I do like to write, I am keenly aware that monochrome photos are far more descriptive than any words I could share with you. The quotes are all about “seeing” which is something we often don’t take the time to do in our lives.
